There are more than 800 species of ticks around the world, with 70 found in Australia. The most important tick in Australia is the Paralysis Tick, Ixodes holocyclus, and over 95% of tick bites in Eastern Australia are due to this species. Most tick-borne illnesses are due to this species.

The Paralysis Tick will crawl up the stems of grasses or along branches and then will latch on to a passing animal, including humans.

Tick infection is caused by a tick-borne bacterium that infects several domestic animals, including dogs.

The most common symptoms in dogs are painful joints, warm and swollen. Other signs are fever, loss of appetite and swollen lymph glands. Generally, the only sign you will see in your dog is that it is reluctant to move. The disease can vary from acute to chronic depending on the dog’s immune system.

If the dog’s immune system is not responsive enough, then chronic symptoms will begin to show such as anaemia and eye issues.

The way out of it all is simple. Address the fundamentals of the immune system and the metabolic harmony that has lost direction. Support the organs and processes of elimination and the whole situation can begin to rebalance itself.

Tips for removing ticks

  • Use only fine-tipped forceps.
  • Do not squeeze the body of the tick.
  • Don’t use matches or pins because they will irritate the tick and make it harder to completely remove.
  • Avoid scratching and picking at the tick.
  • Do not use chemicals like methylated spirits or kerosene.
