Melanomas are the third most common type of skin cancer in horses, with sarcoids being the first most prevalent and squamous-cell carcinoma being second. They can be benign or malignant.
The tumours can arise from either deeper or surface layers of skin or the fibrous or fatty tissues.
They occur most commonly on the ears and noses, inner legs, and the anus and vulva of horses. Most benign tumours grow slowly, are well defined and do not appear to be inflamed. Malignant ones, on the other hand, seem to grow rapidly, ulcerate and sometimes invade adjacent tissue.
The McDowells Melanoma Program combines three powerful products to ensure the cause of the melanoma is being targeted internally and externally.
The herbal formulations in the program have been traditionally used to stimulate the horse’s own natural elimination, which may help to clear these naturally occurring metabolites thereby improving the immune system's response. A robust immune systems can eliminate infective and metabolic waste. A system that is overloaded with inflammation, infection or metabolic waste has a much harder time recovering.
The herbs support the lymphatic system and the process of rejecting the cancers which can be seen to reduce in size quite quickly.
An essential part of the program is the provision of green pick and healthy low sugar natural pasture hay and the cessation of exotic pre-mixed feeds and synthetic supplements to further facilitate detoxification.
You need to maintain a natural feed program as recommended by Catherine McDowell. Diet information is available on this website, and is provided as part of the product instructions.
Melanoma Ointment Warning:
Do not use on areas where friction can occur.
May cause skin irritation. Test area first and use sparingly.
If irritation develops but it is important to maintain application, use every second day.
Apply Zinc cream to pink skin after application to help with sun burn prevention.

Reviews
I wish I had taken photographs!!
I have been giving her the pine bark and melanoma mix in a syringe mixed with some honey and warm water so it tastes better :) and she actually really enjoys it, both of them, now get the rosehips in their feeds.
Whilst the tumours have only reduced in size marginally (if at all, it might be wishful thinking)I have now stopped having to cover them and they have almost all scabbed over and are healing really well which is interesting as they don't appear to be "real" skin / flesh inside but there you go.
As they are under her tail and she gets pretty dirty under there - I have only been putting the ointment on them once or twice a week when I get a chance to give her a decent wash and dry and then pile on a fair bit which does seem to last as it stays relatively greasy for a few days.
Anyway, I'm just about to order some further supplies and hopefully the healing will continue and they will shrink in time.
Can't thank you enough as they were pretty disgusting there for a while I was quite concerned that they would become infected and only get worse...... now they are looking fairly innocuous and I will take and send you some pics just for your info.
Thank you so much again and I will keep in touch as we go along.
Have an awesome day!!
