Travel trauma in horses

Whether it’s a competition, a trip to the trainer, a vet appointment, or a relocation to a new property, travel is an unavoidable part of many horses’ lives. We often invest considerable time, energy, and money preparing our horses to perform at their best—but all of that effort can be undone in a single, stressful journey if we don’t take travel-related wellbeing seriously.

Many horse owners have experienced the anxiety that can come with transport—knowing that some horses simply don’t travel well. While horses may not suffer from motion sickness in the same way humans do, travel can and does create significant physical and emotional stress for many animals. And this stress, if left unaddressed, may lead to poor performance, compromised immunity, gut disturbances, or even long-term behavioural issues.

Travel stress is real - and preventable

Through conversations with our clients and equine practitioners, we’ve learned just how much time some horses spend on the road—sometimes weeks or even months of the year. For these horses, travel is more than just a logistical exercise; it’s a repeated stressor that can have real health consequences if not managed with care.

Travel-related problems can stem from a number of factors, including:

  • Poor preparation or rushed handling
  • Inadequate hydration before or during travel
  • Lack of rest or recovery time post-trip
  • Poor float or truck design (ventilation, suspension, noise levels)
  • Feeding rich or inappropriate feeds too close to travel time
  • Emotional distress from separation or environmental changes

Some horses are especially sensitive and may become nervy, dehydrated, stiff, or off their food after even a short trip. Others may appear fine but experience subtle physiological changes, such as suppressed immunity or digestive imbalance. Fortunately, many of these issues can be addressed through conscious management, herbal support, and individualised care.

Natural ways to support your horse during travel

At McDowells, we advocate for proactive support—ensuring your horse’s physical and emotional systems are well-balanced before, during, and after travel.

Some key ways we support horses naturally include:

Nervous System Support
Travel can activate the fight-or-flight response. Herbs like Chamomile, Zizyphus, and Withania (Ashwagandha) help to settle the nervous system, reduce travel anxiety, and promote emotional stability.

Immune System Support
Long trips and exposure to new environments can challenge a horse’s immune defences. Immune-tonic herbs such as Echinacea, Astragalus, and Olive Leaf can help maintain resilience.

Digestive Support
Travel stress often disrupts digestion. Herbs like Slippery Elm, Licorice, and Marshmallow Root help protect and soothe the gut lining, while Dandelion and Nettle support liver and kidney function for detox post-travel.

Hydration & Recovery
Ensure your horse is hydrated before travel, and consider electrolyte support for long trips. After the journey, allow for restorative recovery time with light movement and gentle herbal tonics to support systemic balance.
